Our Philosophy

Human beings are fundamentally motivated by a need to belong, that is, by a strong desire to form and maintain long-lasting interpersonal attachments. This essential aspect of human nature dates back to the beginning of our existence when tribes shared resources and helped protect each other from predators which was often crucial for survival. Today, we have a deeper understanding of why humans evolved to need others. Psychologist Alfred Adler placed “an evolutionary emphasis that focused on the need to belong and on striving to contribute to human welfare.” Many of the strongest emotions people experience are linked to belongingness - evidence suggests a general conclusion that being accepted, included, or welcomed leads to a variety of positive emotions such as happiness and contentment. On the other hand, being rejected or excluded leads to potent negative feelings such as depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

The World Health Organisation estimates that 450 million people currently suffer from mental health conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental illness never seek help from a health professional, often due to stigma, discrimination, and neglect. However, open and honest connections with others is exactly what we need to assist in lowering these statistics; studies show that people with higher levels of social cohesion experience lower rates of mental health problems. In a well-known article, Baumeister and Leary (1995) concluded that “the desire for interpersonal attachment may well be one of the most far-reaching and integrative constructs currently available to understand human nature.”

Re-Tribe’s roots are planted in the heart of research surrounding the importance of belonging in human nature. We specialise in cultivating a sense of community and connection by facilitating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment that allows for conversation, reflection, and connection. Author of Tribe, Sebastian Junger, writes “human beings need three basic things in order to be content: they need to feel competent at what they do; they need to feel authentic in their lives; and they need to feel connected to others.” Modern society has pulled us away from our tribal roots, and in line with modern research, we believe it is crucial to maintain that aspect of human nature. Without it, we are more likely to become depressed or experience other mental health conditions. Re-Tribe’s philosophy is derived directly from the growing body of evidence surrounding our innate need to belong.
